LAHORE: The Punjab Education Department declared BA/BS (Honours) equivalent to the old master’s degree.
It was decided during a meeting held under the aegis of Secretary Higher Education Ms Arifa Sbohi and Qualification Equivalence Determination Committee. The representative of Punjab Public Service Commission and officials of Punjab University, University of Engineering and Technology, University of Engineering Taxila, Government College University, Lahore College for Women University, University of Education, University of Sargodha, University of Gujrat, Fatima Jinnah University Rawalpindi, Islamia University Bahawalpur, Bahauddin Zakariya University and Government College University Faisalabad attended the meeting.
It is important to note that 12 public and 15 private sector universities offered 4-year bachelor degree programme in various disciplines on the recommendation of the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The HEC also issued a notification in 2006 to all the universities regarding the equivalence of BA/BS (Honours) degree to that of master’s degree. But private organization and public departments, including Punjab Public Service Commission, expressed their confusion. Sources on condition of anonymity said the meeting agreed unanimously to declare 4-year BA/BS programme equivalent to 16 years of master’s education.
Ms Naheed of Fatima Jinnah University, Nazar Abbas of University of Engineering and Technology, Registrar Punjab University Dr Naeem Khan and Dr Kasur Jamal of Lahore College for Women University were also present on the occasion.
