Shanghai’s Youth Daily says a recent meeting to discuss the issue of compulsory education in rural areas has proposed to eliminate tuition fees from a nine-year education program for students in western China next year.
The exemption of tuition fees will grow to benefit the poverty-stricken areas of central and eastern China by 2007.
The results of the meeting also suggest to increase government funding for other aspects of compulsory education in rural areas, such as school infrastructure construction and teacher salaries.
