ISLAMABAD, Education Minister Ejaz Hussain Jakhrani has said that the government is committed to the slogan of “Education for All” and “quality education at all levels” for socio-economic and national development of the country.
Addressing the investiture ceremony of Presidential Awards for Academic Distinction in Islamabad on Thursday, he said despite limited resources the government is spending a huge amount every year in the education sector and there is substantive increase every year for this purpose.
He pointed out that the investment on education in terms of GDP has been in the range of 2.44 to 2.49 percent during the last few years. He assured that in the coming years, the government will increase this percentage to four percent to achieve the set goals in the education sector.
About incentives for the sector, the Education Minister said the President has approved fifty awards to Educationists, teachers and students in recognition of their extraordinary academic performance under the scheme “President’s Awards for outstanding students and teachers.”
He said the present government has also initiated scholarship programmes at the federal and provincial level and currently over three thousand and two hundred students are studying under PHD scholarship programme in HEC recognized universities. The foreign scholarship programmes have also been geared up towards improving research in key areas. The HEC sent two thousand and six hundred students abroad under the scholarship programme during 2007-08.
He said a special scheme has also been launched for the students of Balochistan and FATA to ensure provision of quality education in the under developed areas.
