Lahore-Senior Provincial Minister Raja Riaz Ahmed has said 25 percent subsidy would be given on electricity charges of agriculture tube wells throughout the province, and the federal government would pay 12.5 percent of the subsidy.
Keeping in view the interest of farmers, he issued directions to remove all the hurdles in this regard. The federal government should be approached on issues of the PEPCO and the World Bank, he said.
He was presiding over a joint meeting of the Irrigation Department and the PEPCO. A number of MPAs, I&P secretary Maj (r) Azam Suleman, PEPCO chief Tahir Basharat Cheema and officers of both the departments attended the meeting.
Raja Riaz said, after the shortage of water in rivers and canals, the importance of agriculture tube wells had increased manifold. He issued directions to constitute joint teams of the PEPCO and the Irrigation Department for physical verification of the tube wells. He said the step would help in agro production, adding, the subsidy would be given despite financial constraints.
PEPCO chief Tahir Basharat Cheema told the meeting that, as per 12.5 percent subsidy in 35 districts, an amount of Rs.3.159 billion was due. He added that, in 27 districts, 84724 agriculture tube wells had been verified. In this regard, a claim of Rs.2178 million had submitted and the Punjab government had accepted Rs.1862 million for 75,663 tube wells.
I&P secretary Maj (r) Azam Suleman said the physical verification of tube wells was started in April, 2009 and, out of 35 districts, 27 had been covered so far.
