Karachi-The bleak and disturbing situation that has engulfed the entire country has not left the institutions of higher learning alone with a visible decline in teaching standards, administration and general disposition of the entire staff. The, sufferers, however, are always the students who keep on voicing their concerns that they are not being provided with the ‘right’ education. Such is the state of the University of Karachi (KU), one of Pakistan’s largest and reputable educational institutions.
The KU administration has become so lax that one hardly finds a department opening at 8:30 in the morning. It has almost become a norm that the non-teaching staffers, who prefer to be called ‘sir’ these days, are admonishing students on matters that hardly come in the jurisdictions of their (non-teaching staff’s) concern.
Moreover, a department in the Faculty of Science does not open before 8:40 or later, while the first period, in that department, has to start at 8:30.
Interestingly, a teacher at the English Department of the university had to teach the students on the stairs recently as a non-teaching staffer had the keys of the classrooms and he came late, The News has learnt. Even more interestingly, the staffer, instead of feeling remorse, tried to admonish the teacher for teaching the students on the stairs. The official later rebuked the students as well.
However, the Director of the department remained aloof from the entire episode.
In the meanwhile, a student of KU has handed over a letter to The News that speaks volumes of the way the university and its teachers work. The student, in the letter, complains that they do not understand what the teachers teach them, but they are afraid to complain because they are afraid of the ‘consequences’ they could face from the concerned teacher.
The students, at least those who come in the institution to really study and have no link with any political group, ask for a student body or a kind of student union to take care of their problems.
The student wings of various political groups make matters worse as they regularly interfere in the affairs of the university and demand unfair privileges for themselves and their followers. Sadly, the higher-ups of the KU prefer silence on the grave matter as they themselves are, perhaps, a production of political favouritism.
