LAHORE-THE Young Doctors Association (YDA) has condemned the administration of the King Edward Medical University (KEMU) for failing to fill the vacancies of senior medical teachers in the Department of Anesthesia, which provides most crucial intervention for all kinds of surgeries in over 25 clinical departments of all its three attached hospitals.
Young Doctors Association office-bearers Dr Salman Kazmi and others said that one seat of professor of Anesthesia, created by the Syndicate, for attached Lady Wellington Hospital and Lady Aitchison Hospital, five seats of associate professors of Anesthesia including three seats in Mayo Hospital and one seat each in Lady Wellington Hospital and Lady Aitcheson Hospital and two seats of assistant professors in Department of Anesthesia-one seat of Anesthesia each in Mayo Hospital and in one of the two other attached hospitals-were lying vacant, which badly affected the quality of training of young doctors and healthcare services to the patients in the institution.
Highlighting the gravity of the situation in Department of Anesthesia, they said that Prof Syed Millat Hussain recently retired while Prof Dr Khawar Ali had been posted in Shaikh Zayed Hospital, Rahimyar Khan but he was yet to join his new posting. However, they said Prof Asghar Ali Randhawa from Punjab Medical College, Faisalabad, had been appointed on the post of Professor of Anesthesia, and added that he was not able to serve at least three days a week because he frequently had to move to and fro from Faisalabad to Lahore every week.
If Prof Dr Khawar Ali joins his new posting, they said, there would be only one Professor of Anesthesia out of two sanctioned posts in Mayo Hospital while another sanctioned post of Professor of Anesthesia for attached Lady Wellington Hospital and Lady Aitchison Hospital was also vacant.
Furthermore, they said, five out of the total six sanctioned posts of associate professors in Department of Anesthesia including three out of four sanctioned posts in Mayo Hospital and two posts (one each) in Lady Wellington Hospital and Lady Aitchison Hospital were vacant.
Similarly, they said, two out of eight sanctioned posts of assistant professors of Anesthesia, one out of four seats of Anesthesia in Mayo Hospital and one out of four in the two other attached hospitals, were also lying vacant.
Three seats of assistant professors in Lady Wellington Hospital and Lady Aitchison Hospital have been filled recently.
The surgeons have complained that the extreme shortage of Anesthetists had been severely affecting the surgeries of a large number of patients in all three attached hospitals.
“The King Edward Medical University administration has failed to take immediate steps to fill these crucial posts despite raising the issue time and again during the last several months,” Young Doctors Association office-bearers regretted.
