Only 224 – or 0.74 per cent – of 30,417 regular and private students obtained Grade A-1 in the Secondary School Certificate part-II (class X) general group annual examinations 2009, the results announced on Monday by the Board of Secondary Education Karachi (BSEK) showed.
The overall pass percentage in the exams is 62.23 per cent, which is three per cent higher than the pass percentage of the previous year’s examinations.
However, this year’s pass percentage is nine per cent less when compared to the results of the 2007 exams of the same group. It is, however, surprising to note that the pass percentage of the private candidates in the exams is higher than that of the regular candidates as it stands at 64.55per cent and 61.72 per cent, respectively.
The first and the third positions in the exams are bagged by students of the Mama Parsi Girls Secondary School while a student of BVS Parsi High School has clinched the second position.
Farah Dhunjishaw Ferozepurwalla (roll no.637561), daughter of Dhunjishaw Ferozepurwalla, topped in the examinations. She got 765 marks out of the total 850 marks (90 per cent).
Farhan Hasan Siddiqui (roll no.602549), son of Mashahid Hasan Siddiqui, got the second position. He obtained 747 marks (87.88 per cent).
Amun Arif Siddiqui (roll no.637555), daughter of Arif Ahmed Siddiqui, bagged the third position with 745 marks (87.65 per cent).
A total of 30,417 students – 24,937 regular and 5,480 private – appeared in the exams and 18,876 students (15,392 regular and 3,484 private) have been declared pass in different grades.
Statistics released by the BSEK showed that of the total 24,937 regular students (6,299 boys and 18,638 girls) who appeared in the exams, only 213 candidates – (49 boys and 164 girls) 0.85 per cent – got Grade A-1.
Statistics further showed that 1,563 candidates – (411 boys and 1,152 girls) 6.27pc – secured grade A.
Some 4,049 candidates – (1,225 boys and 2,824 girls) 16.24 per cent – obtained Grade B.
A total of 5,720 candidates – (1,593 boys and 4,127 girls) 22.94pc – got Grade C.
Around 3,585 candidates – (1,100 boys and 2,485 girls) 14.38pc – secured Grade D.
And according to the statistics, some 262 students – (93 boys and 169 girls) 1.05pc – were declared pass in Grade E.
Among 5,480 private candidates – (3,735 boys and 1,745 girls) – only 11 candidates – (3 boys and 8 girls) 0.20pc – secured Grade A-1.
Around 220 candidates – (147 boys and 73 girls) 4.01pc – got grade A.
A total of 857 candidates – (625 boys and 232 girls) 15.64pc – obtained Grade B.
A total of 1,237 candidates – (916 boys and 321 girls) 22.57pc – got Grade C.
While a total of 862 candidates – (651 boys 211 girls) 15.73pc – secured Grade D. Some 58 candidates – (49 boys and nine girls) 1.06pc – were placed in Grade E.
