LAHORE: In what is being dubbed an unprecedented move, the city will not witness any seminars, walks, vigils, rallies or conferences to mark the International Human Rights Day (today) following the deteriorating law and order situation, Daily Times learnt on Wednesday.
No prominent non-government organisation (NGO), associations or civil society representatives will partake in any activity to mark the day due to security concerns. Activities that had already been planned were also cancelled, as NGOs were not satisfied with security measures.
The South Asia Partnership Pakistan (SAPPK) had organised a seminar on the day, which was cancelled because of security concerns. Various NGOs and civil society activists had planned a protest march from the Lahore Press Club to the Punjab Assembly to stress the need for human rights provisions. The rally has also been cancelled, as security clearance could not be obtained.
Security: SAPPK Programme Officer Naureen Salahuddin told Daily Times that many activities, including theatrical performances, seminars and rallies, had been planned, adding that all of them had to be cancelled in light of security threats.
She said the “major activity” planned for the day was a consultation, to be attended by the civil society and representatives from various NGOs. “The main event’s cancellation resulted in other activities being postponed as well,” she said.
The Aurat Foundation, an organisation working for women rights, had also organised a conference that was cancelled due to security concerns. The organisation’s representative, Abid Ali, had initially said the day would not be marked by any activity, however some activities were planned later on. “We have planned a conference at Alhamra. If we get the security clearance we will go ahead with the plan, otherwise we will organize a seminar at the South Asian Free Media Centre,” he said.
Strengthening Participatory Organisation (SPO) Regional Manager Salman Abid said current wave of terrorism and security concerns in the country had resulted in the postponement and cancellation of various activities planned to mark the International Human Rights Day. Nadeem Anthony, a human rights activist and Human Rights Commission of Pakistan (HRCP) member, said the prevalent situation in the country was “quite bad”.
