LAHORE-PUNJAB University Vice-Chancellor Prof Dr Mujahid Kamran has stated that the varsity administration is actively considering setting up of a welfare fund worth Rs. 20 million for utilising its interest proceeds for medical, academic and wedding expenses of the children of low paid PU employees.
He was addressing a meeting of the varsity employees at the Faisal Auditorium, New Campus, on Wednesday, which was packed to capacity while a large number of employees were also present outside the auditorium.
Dr Mujahid Kamran said under his directions, the administration would soon take in hand the construction work of houses for the employees while 40 such housing units would be completed towards the end of the current year. To encourage hardworking and honest officials, best employee of the year in each category of varsity functionaries would be awarded a cash prize of Rs.5000 every year.
During the past two years, services of 924 employees were regularised, 257 were promoted while 250 were freshly recruited out of whom 80 percent varsity employees had benefited in form of higher pay grades. With a view to facilitating the employees, typing speed in case of junior clerk, junior KPO and senior KPO has been relaxed from 50 to 40, 50 to 45 and 55 to 50 respectively. In future, only junior KPOs, already working in the varsity, will be promoted against the vacant posts of senior KPOs with the result that 100 percent promotions will go to the varsity employees, he added.
The cadre structure of each category of employees will also be decided after consultation with the head of the concerned department very shortly. The grant of honorarium of Rs 300 to each Christian employee on Christmas will continue in the coming years.
The Vice-Chancellor said during his entire service, he had always considered himself accountable to his conscience and the Almighty while carrying out his duties irrespective of any pressure or discrimination. Even today he punctually reaches his office at 8:00am in the morning and continues rendering his administrative responsibilities till late in the night besides regularly delivering lectures in the Physics Department. He said during the last two years he had focused all his time and energies to improve the academic standard and enhance the number of PhD faculty.
Earlier addressing the audience, PU Registrar Prof Dr Muhammad Naeem Khan and Students Advisor Iftikhar Ahmed Chaudhry termed the today’s meeting an historic event, as employees, by participating in record number, had proved beyond any shadow of doubt that they were fully united in safeguarding the honour of their internationally-acclaimed varsity.
