LAHORE – The Punjab government has recommended federal government to enhance allocation for education sector from 2.7 to 7 per cent of GDP through an act of parliament which suggests an over 200 per cent increase in the budget of education department.
The provincial government in its recommendations for the national policy on education 2009 also pleaded the federal government to bring the Students of Madrassas at par wit mainstream schools besides establishing regulatory bodies for running private sector institutions.
These proposals were discussed in a meeting held to review the recommendations regarding National Education Policy 2009 at Chief Minister’s Secretariat, here on Saturday. Chief Minister Punjab Shahbaz Sharif presided over the meeting while Provincial Minister for Education Mujtaba Shuja-ur-Rehman, Member National Assembly Saira Afzal Tarar, Member Provincial Assembly Mohtarma Zaib Jaffar, Ch Mumtaz Ahmad Jajja, Chairman Taskforce Raja Muhammad Anwar, additional chief secretary, secretary schools as well as educationists and other senior officers concerned attended the meeting.
Among the other recommendations school health education was suggested to be included in curriculum keeping in view the cultural sensitivities and level of students.
Some other recommendations include: Instead of a centralised assessment system by gradually reducing the number of boards in five years time, the existing institutional structure be strengthened; Islamiyat should continue as compulsory subject from Class-I to BA/BSc level; for class-I to V basic beliefs and selected verses of the Holy Quran/Traditions of the Holy Prophet (PBUH) should be introduced; for class-Vl to twelve the Nazira Quran with translation be included; any material repugnant to Islamic teachings and values be excluded from curriculum and text books; Islamiyat should be a part of the curriculum of pre-service teachers training; a common curricular framework shall be applied; after five years science and Math shall be in English only; inter-provincial education ministers (IPEM) shall oversee the implementation; development of national standards for assessment; school management committees shall be strengthened; allocation of financial resources will be undertaken to achieve the EFA goals; up-gradation of all primary schools to middle level; financial support to poor children to check drop out rate; secondary and higher secondary education expansion in provision in rural areas especially for girls.
