Islamabad-The world is changing fast and becoming a global village, with towns and cities growing and changing the mindsets of the people living in them.
Everyone is complaining about the changing norms and values not only in our country but all over the world at this time.
Our fathers and then their fathers, while recalling their time as that of the best social norms, often complain about this change and term the present time as that of lacking social norms.
People’s attitudes, morals and values seem to have dropped along with the small towns, as everyone knows everyone else’s reputation. This problem is not unique to a particular area, and the decline in morality is a worldwide plague.
There is a dire need to tighten the gap between parents and children to overcome this mess, known as the lack of social norms. We all need to step back and learn from ourselves. Everyone should examine their own faults and try to change them. We all know stealing is wrong, but some of us do it anyway. We need to ask ourselves why, and then understand that we need to stop.
Farrukh Zia, a grandfather of four children, said he did his matriculation in the 50s and that was the time when social norms were given the highest priority. Recalling the rich values of his age, he said, “We never spoke loud in front of our elders, as it was considered disrespectful.” He was of the view that it was a time when elders were given priority and whenever an edible or any other thing came into the house, it was first of all presented to the elders but nowadays, children come first and elders come last.
The one way to uphold our social norms is to teach moral values in our schools. A large percentage of schools used to teach about values such as integrity, respect of others, honesty, obedience, and responsibility.
Bibi Zaitoon, while talking to this agency, termed her time as being rich of moral and social values. “We could never think about ignoring or trespassing our social norms, as these social habits were the focal part of our lives,” she said and added that it is our thinking that has changed the social respect of the elders and has degraded our values.
It is right that the age of science and technology is a fast moving world but at the same time, we should remember that only keeping our social norms alive could make us a proud nation.
