UK Study Visa

Posted by Asghar Saigra on Sunday,January 18, 2009 in Study in UK | 1 Comment

United Kingdom is always the most popular and attractive destination for Pakistani students. Thousands of students from all over the world come to UK to fulfill their dreams to have a well recognized degree for any employer in the world.
Please keep in mind that UK student visa does not constitute a route to settlement, it does not award indefinite leave to reman in the UK often known as permanent residence and it will not lead to the opportunity to become a UK citizen. However, student visa may allow you to switch to another UK immigration category without leaving the country, upon the successful completion of your course.

UK Higher Education System

The UK has a vast variety of higher education opportunities to offer students with over 100 universities offering various degree programs for students from the UK and around the world. In the UK about one-third of all students go on to some form of higher education.

To make sure that all students are receiving quality higher education and the quality is maintained, UK has implemented quality assurance and academic audit systems. The university departments are obliged to meet standards by professional bodies. These standards are high not just in teaching but in other facilities such as libraries, computers, research equipment and living accommodation.
In the UK most undergraduate degree programs take three years to finish, however, the “sandwich course” is increasing in popularity, which is four years and involves one year in the work place.

From 2007, universities in the UK are allowed to charge students from the UK and EU up to to £3,070 per year (depending on the school and location). International students from the all over the world will have to pay the full school fees which will vary depending on the school. Theese fees can range from to £4, 000 per year up to to £18,000 per year or even more.

To choose the right college or university most students consider the following factors:

  • How much does it cost
  • Location of the University
  • Size of the University
  • Access to home, place of work etc.
  • Available Courses

Academic and Social Life of Student in UK

In UK, student’s life at university is completely different to school or college and gives you the opportunity to study a wide range of academic and vocational subjects. The teaching is done through tutorials, seminars and lectures. Universities in UK expected every student to take initiative, listen, learn and take notes and consider all this part of growing up. It is a great experience.
The main forms of teaching at university are:

Lectures
Tutorials
Seminars

Lectures provide the foundations to the subject. Similar to a large classroom setting, they are used to inform, explain and illustrate. Lecturers use a range of teaching methods including visual, audio, and web-based materials to support your learning.

Tutorials involve a meeting of a small group of students and a Tutor. Here they can discuss lectures in more depth, ask questions and tackle specific problems.

Seminars tend to involve larger groups of students than tutorials and offer more intensive discussion. These are more common in the later years and can focus on discussion of presentations by fellow students.

Social Life of UK student

One thing’s for certain, whether you’re student or not, you’ll find no shortage of things to see and do in UK to socialize yourself very quickly.  The UK offers you lots of exciting things to do and different ways to practise your social life.

  • Most schools, colleges and universities arrange social events from discos, barbeques and pub crawls to visits to famous shops, markets, theatres and historic sites.
  • Many schools, colleges and universities have games rooms, computer rooms, sports centres, libraries and cafes and can arrange local sports facilities such as golf, tennis or horse-riding.
  • Every region has something special to offer – from sports such as surfing or rock climbing, top class football and rugby, regional foods, world class pop music and classical orchestras.
  • The UK has some of the best museums and art galleries in the world, and almost all of them are free.
  • It is quick, easy and cheap to visit other European countries on low cost flights.
  • The UK has some of the best resturants, hotels, food chains in the world, and you can find all types of food there with ease.

Visa Duration, Eligibility and Employment Opportunities

This page contains information about the duration of your study visa, its eligibility requirements and the employment options you have during your stay in UK.

Please keep in mind that if your course of study lasts less than six months, you may be able to enter the country under a UK visit visa, often referred to as a travel or tourist visa. However, the benefit of studying in the UK under a visa for students is that you will also be permitted to undertake limited employment.

Duration:
There is no set duration for the UK student visa, however UK student visas are usually granted for an initial period of one year and are determined by the length of the course to be studied. In some cases, a study visa extension may be granted by applying for Further Leave to Remain (FLR). Students can also switch to another visa category after the completion of their course in the UK without leaving the country.

Eligibility:

A UK student visa application must show that you have been accepted onto a course of study at one of the following:

  • A publically-funded institution of further or higher education (e.g University)
  • A private education institution that maintains satisfactory records of enrolment and attendance for students and offers courses which lead to qualification recognized by appropriate accreditation bodies.
  • An independent fee-paying school outside the maintained sector

Applicants for UK study visa must intend to follow either:

  • A recognized full-time degree course
  • A weekday course at a single institution that involves at least 15 hours of organized daytime study a week.
  • A full-time course of study at an independent fee-paying school.

Students must be able to meet the costs of their course and accommodation and the maintenance of themselves and any dependents without undertaking full-time employment or engaging in business or having recourse to public funds. The applicants should also intend to leave the country at the end of their studies.

Employment Options:

Unlike a UK visit visa or travel visa, applicants for study visa are allowed to take part-time or holiday work but must not engage in the following:

  • Work for more than 20 hours a week during term time (except in vacation periods), unless it is a work placement and part of a study program and the educational institution agrees.
  • Conduct business, be self-employed, or provide services as a professional sports person or entertainer.
  • Work full-time in a permanent job.

Spouse and Dependent Immigration:

Spouse immigration is only permitted for married partners and unlike a fiancé visa or unmarried partner visa, your common-law partner is not allowed to join you. Married partners will be granted leave to remain for period equal to that granted to the student. During this time, they must be able to support themselves either independently or with the help of the applicant. Your spouse will be permitted to work only if your permit was issued for 12 months or more.
